THE AILERON - M.H.C. 010

In my opinion one of the most beautiful cars of recent history is the McLaren Speedtail.  Its forms and ratios are just incredible… almost every angle offers an incredible view of design and engineering, so I figured… why not mess with that concept and make a mess of things :)  When Carlos showed me his M6GT I knew I had my work cut out for me.  I was originally going to rebuild my F1 GTR but by the time I had finished those renders months had passed and they no longer looked as good as they needed to and I decided to drop that concept all together a few weeks back and start new.  I felt the Speedtail would be a perfect design and homage counterpart to Carlos’s M6GT.  It turns out they are very well connected and bridge the gap between the old and new for McLaren as a company.  I started working on this one a few weeks ago and have to say its my personal favorite of the MHC collection so far… LOTS of learning and some massive breakthroughs in the approach to photorealism with this collection.  So thankful to be making this collection with Carlos.  We are constantly pushing one another daily with the goal of being the best version of ourselves daily.  Its not easy but its been an amazing pattern of growth that Im so thankful for.  This is just the first of MANY renders for MHC 010 edition which I call the X-P9 or THE AILERON.

THE AILERON - M.H.C. 010

There are a few big things I wanted to learn with this build and one of them was to play with light and composition in a way I haven’t yet.  I wanted to try my best to use the harsh mid day shadows to lead hard shadow lines through the composition and use bounce or secondary lights to suggest the rest of the form.  I normally prefer morning or evening light as it’s much more pleasant on the eyes but I wanted to see what I could do with a situation that wasn’t ideal.  This practice will help me down the road when I’m shooting in the real world.  These are all really fun tests to help sharpen the craft of film making down the road and what better way to learn then with an amazing friend and subject matter we both purely adore :). If your going to learn something challenging… why not make it something you love?

THE AILERON - M.H.C. 010

Once of my favorite viewing angles of the McLaren Speedtail or THE AILERON is this front lower 3/4.  I love how all of the lines converge and play with the light.  When it came to modifications of the original body I tried to keep things true to the original forms and just augment certain things.  I know I am totally messing up years of professional engineering and incredible design work but I couldn’t resist.  My over all thought with this build was to take the current car and move it ahead about 30-40 years and its got a few fun upgrades.  One of the many interesting things I learned about the speedtail while researching it is that it is still not allowed to be driven publicly in the United States due to it not having side mirrors.  What a wild and awesome concept.  I was originally finished with this render and then Carlos showed me where he was with his collection so I had to keep up and I then redid this shot and added in some foreground elements and little props and imperfections to help make it feel real to life.  My personal goal with all of this is that it shouldn’t matter if its digital or not… it should just excite.
