THE BELLADONNA - M.H.C. 016

I love the Zakspeed Capri and the Mach 1 is one of my favorite Mustang models.  I thought it would be fun to combine them and see what could happen.  While building muse for this concept, I discovered the insane racing class Turismo Carretera which I instantly fell in love with.  I shared it with Carlos and we both knew we had to build something in this race class theme.  I knew I wanted to have a big loud V8 with ITB’s and huge tires supporting the power, along with lots of fun modifications that fit a build I would make in reality. It is really crazy to see how much growth has come over this past year.  When I first set out to build this concept, I was trying to use Vray and 3ds Max, but then eventually landed on using my trusty Cinema4D and Corona renderer which have always been a lethal combo for me.  The one key thing that keeps me learning and growing is being excited about the project/build.

THE BELLADONNA - M.H.C. 016

When it comes to CGI, most of you know it’s REALLY hard to build a full CGI scene and make it manageable and reasonably painless when in production.  One fun asset I love using is shipping containers.  They aren’t often super dense in size and resources, but they offer a great way to build a compelling scene while hiding the horizon.  An added bonus is that they are often used in real life automotive photography, making them fit the realm of plausible realism.  I wanted to create a fun juxtaposition between the white containers and the bright blue Mach 1.  When I am framing up a composition, I like to start with a focal length that matches the composition.  Then I try and find out the right human/car ratio to get the POV to be real world as if I was there holding my camera taking a photo.  From there, I will augment the lighting or the setting to create visual cues and interest.

THE BELLADONNA - M.H.C. 016

One of the things I went back and forth on when modeling out the rear was how simple and clean to leave it.  The Turismo Carretera cars often have a very blunt and clean/simple rear end, but I couldn’t resist adding the wing extension and body lines.  What I ended up finding as a solution was to bring back those classic Mustang rear lights to fill in the empty space.  I wanted to really push the details and believability on these renders, so although simple and almost forgettable, adding little shrubs and plants to the scene really helped.  I constantly say that “complexity is many simple things combined.” Aiming to achieve photo realism all comes down to combining complexities, and The Belladonna has its fair share of them.
